Get into the right mindset for work.

As the world is going through a big crisis, everyone had to make several sacrifices and adjustments to cope. One, being companies changing tactics to work remotely whilst coming to terms with both the benefits and disadvantages of working from home (WFH).

Have you been working remotely or even working in your parents’ home ever since the Covid-19 outbreak? You may have thought at first what could go wrong with having the comfort of no proper rules.

Distraction and lack of good working environment

From a distance, no proper rules may present themselves like so many other sides of remote independent working: relaxation, cosy clothes, and a decently flexible schedule. Get closer, though, and you start seeing the shadows underneath.

Working remotely at home has always had a dark side that may seem embarrassing, but I’m sure many of us can relate. Procrastination, unmonitored performance, burnouts, riddled with lack of motivation, and those frequent breaks.

Also, creating a home office with your own desk while staying with family can become a distraction. From parents requesting your assistance to younger siblings or kids wanting your attention, you may find it difficult to differentiate between work and personal life.

That’s where time management comes in. From my experience, you need to draw wisdom on managing time from your academic years and the practical side. If you take it from only one place, it becomes rigid and stale.

Understanding the elements of time management and the other aspects that come with it — like preparation and beating on your craft -will help you become a pro at time management.

Lacking motivation

Sometimes willpower is not enough when it comes to the lack of motivation. Motivation is the fuel that pushes you to complete your tasks for work and help you achieve your goals. But, it can be effortless to lose motivation swiftly when someone loses focus and sight of their goal.

Though self-motivation and the willpower to keep going works, it only helps to a certain extent, adversely affect people’s productivity. Working from an office environment gives you that purpose backed up with sharing a common goal, which provides you with all the energy you need from external motivation to succeed in creating top performances. This goes back to working remotely, which brings the lack of that kind of environment.

While people have adapted quickly to changing circumstances, getting the most out of a new WFH model can still take some extra discipline and consideration.

It’s hardly surprising. Offices have subtle cues and momentum that gets you into a productive mindset, while your remote working space at home is in a location you associate with relaxation and fun.

Equally, a lack of structure can lead to short working hours due to procrastination or even overworking and forgetting those all-important screen breaks.

Burnout

Having flexible schedule working hours may seem and can be a huge benefit working from home if people use, and prepare their days well suited to them. However, this can swiftly manifest into a slippery slope to a disadvantage for those who forget to prep, and cannot balance work life with personal life.

Procrastination may become a factor that ultimately leads to scrambling with little time to finish tasks, work past office hours, or pulling all-nighters to complete job assignments. As a result, employees feel stressed and completely burned out.

On the other hand, working in an office environment can draw the line between private life and professional life.

Unmonitored performance

Individuals working from home may often fall into the trap of procrastination when work becomes unmonitored. As a result, they usually take breaks prolonging their working hours due to getting fewer tasks done.

In contrast, when working in an office environment, someone can track the teams’ work. Employees who need this kind of accountability could perform better by being on-site.

One thing that many people would not want to imply about themselves is being “lazy”. However, I can confess that the constant dragging makes me feel like laziness is a factor in my workday, and I am sure others can relate.

It is something we can all work on it and overcome. It is like a dark tunnel, where you might not see the light right away, but if you keep going, you will come to a better place and realise it is worth it for the end result.

Word of advise for those that are starting out into the work life remotely at home or in an office environment, don’t think of it as a sprint but a marathon. We all make mistakes, but its all about picking yourself up and keep moving to correct your mistakes to improve, and before you know it you will be where you need to be to get to where you want go to succeed.

The bottom line is that both working from home and working in an office set up have their advantages and disadvantages. It is a matter of knowing your working style and what you need to perform better.
